ABOUT THE AUTHOR

MY INSPIRATION

WHY DID I CHOOSE LAW?

I have always relished reading. When I was 11 years old, my dad handed me a copy of Long Walk to Freedom. At the end of the week I had finished the book. It introduced me to the reality of apartheid in South Africa and how the law was used to justify and facilitate inequality, injustice and racism. It also shifted my focus to transformative constitutionalism and the need for change. Being exposed to my dad’s law practice, I realized the importance of the right to legal representation and the pivotal role that lawyers played in transforming history.

THE IMPORTANCE OF RESILIENCE

From dealing with difficult judges, to losing matters, to having difficult opponents, the most important lesson I have learnt is that resilience must prevail. While self-doubt inevitably comes to the surface, I remind my-self that I have done my best and that tomorrow I will try harder. I reflect on whatever has happened and ask myself how I could do better the next time.

PREPARING FOR COURT

When I was in High School, my best friend and I were on the school’s League Debating Team. The invaluable lesson that our coach taught us was to consider all the points that our opponents would raise and devise ways to counter it. With each of my matters, I use this as the final step, after ascertaining the facts and researching the law. During practice, one of the senior counsel that I worked with taught me the importance of reading as widely as possible on the area of law in question, particularly text-books and of course case law. This gives me the added confidence to present a case and assertively answer any questions that the Judge raises.
